Haiti UPDATE: House of Hope 4 Children (HOH4C) Strengthens Its Community Response Across the Grand South Following Hurricane Melissa

General Context
Since October 25, 2025, Hurricane Melissa—classified as Category 5—has severely affected the Southern and Grand’Anse departments of Haiti, causing heavy flooding, landslides, and extensive material damage. In response, House of Hope 4 Children Inc. (HOH4C) activated its community emergency mechanism and deployed a rapid response team across the impacted regions.
Expanded Community Presence
HOH4C maintains a permanent field presence across all 13 communes of Grand’Anse, including Jérémie, Roseaux, Bonbon, Abricots, Dame-Marie, Moron, Pestel, and other highly vulnerable localities.The organization has also extended its interventions to the Southern Department, particularly in Camp-Perrin, Les Cayes, Port-Salut, Côteaux, and Saint-Jean-du-Sud, in coordination with the Civil Protection Directorate (DGPC), the Health and WASH Clusters, and local authorities.
To date, 228 community volunteers have been mobilized across the Grand South through 18 active community groups, focusing on humanitarian data collection, hygiene promotion, cholera prevention, and psychosocial support for affected families.
Humanitarian Situation and Priority Needs
Heavy rainfall and persistent winds continue to damage infrastructure.HOH4C teams report road blockages, flooded bridges, and overcrowded shelters across several communes.The areas of Duchity, Blay, Abricots, Bonbon, Mafran, and Dame-Marie remain among the most critically affected.
The main priority needs identified include:
Access to safe drinking water and chlorination of contaminated points;
Food assistance and hygiene kits distribution;
Bedding supplies (sheets, mats, blankets);
Medical and psychosocial support for vulnerable families;
Temporary shelter and relocation for displaced households.
Current Interventions in the Grand South
Grand’Anse:In Mafran, Dame-Marie, and Gommier, overflowing rivers have destroyed homes and flooded residential zones.The HOH4C WASH team is currently deployed to provide water chlorination, cholera prevention awareness, and daily data updates from the field.
South:
Camp-Perrin: submerged bridges and urgent need for chlorination.
Les Cayes: overcrowded shelters lacking sheets and food supplies.
Port-Salut: 38 partially destroyed houses and absence of hygiene kits.
Côteaux and Saint-Jean-du-Sud: contaminated water points and difficult access due to isolation.
Coordination and Monitoring
HOH4C’s actions are part of the multisectoral coordination framework led by DGPC, OCHA, and the Health and WASH Clusters Community data are updated every 24 hours and shared daily at 3:00 p.m. (Port-au-Prince time) with national and international partners.
The organization is calling for enhanced logistical support, including fuel, first-aid materials, hygiene and cholera kits, boots, portable lamps, and megaphones to maintain operational capacity.

House of Hope 4 Children urges national and international institutions to support ongoing community-based relief efforts, ensuring:
A rapid, coordinated humanitarian response to essential needs;
The strengthening of local resilience;
The protection of vulnerable families and children in affected areas.
